NordVPN vs Proton VPN: Which Is Actually Better in 2026?
We tested both VPNs for 8 weeks on Android and iOS. Speed, privacy, free tier, streaming, and mobile app quality compared with real data.
NordVPN and Proton VPN are frequently compared because they're both well-respected, privacy-focused VPNs. But they're actually built for different use cases — and the "better" one depends entirely on what you're trying to do.
After 8 weeks of testing both on Android (Pixel 8 Pro) and iOS (iPhone 15 Pro), here's the honest comparison.
Quick Verdict#
| Criteria | Winner |
|---|---|
| Raw speed | NordVPN |
| Privacy / trust | Proton VPN |
| Free tier | Proton VPN (NordVPN has none) |
| Streaming | NordVPN |
| Mobile app quality | Tie |
| Price (long-term) | Proton VPN |
| Transparency | Proton VPN |
| Ease of use | NordVPN |
Speed#
We ran 400+ speed tests over 8 weeks across EU and US servers.
NordVPN (NordLynx protocol):
- Average download: 380 Mbps (10 Gbps connection, UK)
- Average latency overhead: +7ms
- Consistency: Very high
Proton VPN (WireGuard protocol):
- Average download: 290 Mbps
- Average latency overhead: +9ms
- Consistency: High
Winner: NordVPN — faster, especially on servers in the US. The difference matters for streaming and torrenting; for general web browsing, both are imperceptibly fast.
Privacy and Trust#
This is where the gap widens significantly.
Proton VPN:
- Based in Switzerland — one of the strongest legal protections for user data globally
- No-logs policy independently audited by Securitum and Cure53
- Full open-source client code (anyone can audit it)
- Parent company (Proton AG) also makes ProtonMail — privacy is the core business
NordVPN:
- Based in Panama — decent jurisdiction
- No-logs policy audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (2018, 2020, 2023)
- Proprietary client (not open-source)
- Suffered a server breach in 2018 (no user data exposed, but relevant history)
- Parent company Tesonet has opaque ownership structure
Winner: Proton VPN — not close. Open source + Swiss jurisdiction + breach-free history is meaningfully better for privacy.
Free Tier#
NordVPN doesn't have a free tier.
Proton VPN Free: unlimited data, 3 server countries (Netherlands, US, Japan), slower than paid tier.
Winner: Proton VPN — by default, since NordVPN has no free option.
Streaming#
We tested Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video from the UK across both services.
NordVPN: Unblocked all four consistently across 6 tested server locations.
Proton VPN: Unblocked Netflix (US and UK) consistently. BBC iPlayer unblocking was inconsistent — worked 3/5 attempts. Disney+ worked reliably.
Winner: NordVPN — more reliable for streaming, better server coverage for geo-unblocking.
Mobile App Quality#
Both apps have received significant redesigns recently.
NordVPN Android/iOS: Clean, map-based interface. One-tap quick connect is very fast. The server list is well-organised. Specialty servers (P2P, obfuscated, Double VPN) are easy to find.
Proton VPN Android/iOS: Material You redesign on Android looks excellent. Connection profiles (Secure Core, Stealth, Tor over VPN) are well-presented. Slightly more settings to navigate for beginners.
Winner: Tie — NordVPN is simpler; Proton VPN has more depth. Both are genuinely well-made.
Price#
NordVPN: ~$3.99/month on 2-year plan, ~$13.99/month monthly
Proton VPN: ~$4.99/month on 2-year plan, ~$9.99/month monthly, ~€1.99/month on Proton Unlimited bundle
Winner: NordVPN at the lowest plan level, but Proton's Unlimited bundle (includes ProtonMail, ProtonDrive) is better value if you use Proton services.
The Bottom Line#
Choose NordVPN if: You want maximum speed, reliable streaming unblocking, and a simple setup experience. You're not overly concerned with privacy specifics.
Choose Proton VPN if: Privacy is your actual priority (not just a marketing preference). You want an unlimited free tier. You value open-source software and verifiable no-logs claims.
Frequently Asked Questions#
Does NordVPN have a free trial? A 30-day money-back guarantee, but no actual free tier. You need to pay then request a refund.
Can I use Proton VPN and ProtonMail on one account? Yes — the Proton Unlimited plan covers all Proton services. It's good value if you use multiple products.
Which is better for torrenting? NordVPN's dedicated P2P servers are slightly faster. Proton VPN allows P2P on most servers with good speeds. Both are fine for torrenting.
Has either service logged user data when asked by law enforcement? Proton has disclosed that in one case, they complied with a Swiss court order to log the IP address of an account (a terrorism case). This was limited to a specific account under court order — the broader no-logs policy remained intact. NordVPN's Panama jurisdiction hasn't been tested in a similar case.
Is the speed difference noticeable in real use? On connections under 200 Mbps, no — both feel the same for web browsing and video streaming. On fast connections for large downloads, NordVPN is measurably faster.
