iOS Sideloading Guide 2025 — AltStore, TrollStore & EU Marketplace
Complete guide to sideloading apps on iPhone in 2025. Covers AltStore PAL, TrollStore, developer mode, and the EU App Marketplace — step by step.
Sideloading on iOS — installing apps outside the official App Store — became significantly easier after the EU's Digital Markets Act forced Apple to open up the platform in 2024. If you're outside the EU, you still have options. This guide covers all the main methods.
Method 1: AltStore PAL (EU Only — Easiest)#
AltStore PAL is the cleanest sideloading solution for EU users. It's a third-party marketplace approved by Apple under the DMA.
Requirements:
- iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later
- European Union country set as your App Store region
Setup steps:
- Go to altstore.io↗ on your iPhone's Safari browser
- Tap "Download AltStore PAL"
- Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management
- Find AltStore under "Enterprise App" and tap Trust
- Open AltStore and browse the available apps
What you can install: AltStore PAL hosts apps that aren't on the App Store, including emulators like Delta and game streaming tools. Content is curated and reviewed.
Method 2: TrollStore (iOS 14–16.6.1 and Select iOS 17 Builds)#
TrollStore is a permanent app installer that works on specific iOS versions. Unlike AltStore, apps installed via TrollStore don't expire after 7 days.
Supported versions: iOS 14.0 through 16.6.1, plus certain iOS 17 builds before 17.0. Check ios.cfw.guide↗ for your exact version support.
Installation via TrollStar (if available):
- Open Safari and go to the TrollStore installation page for your version
- Follow the version-specific instructions (differs by iOS version)
- Once TrollStore is installed, you can install IPA files permanently
⚠️ TrollStore exploits specific system vulnerabilities. Apple patches these in newer iOS versions. If you're on iOS 17.4+, TrollStore likely won't work.
Method 3: Developer Mode + Sideloadly (All Regions)#
This method uses Apple's developer provisioning system. It works worldwide but requires re-signing apps every 7 days (free Apple ID) or 1 year (paid developer account).
Requirements:
- A Mac or Windows PC with Sideloadly installed
- A free Apple ID (7-day refresh) or paid Apple Developer account ($99/year, 1-year refresh)
- USB cable
Steps:
- Download Sideloadly↗ on your computer
- Connect your iPhone via USB and trust the computer on your device
- Open Sideloadly and drag the
.ipafile into the app - Sign in with your Apple ID (this is used locally for signing only)
- Click Start and wait for the installation to complete
- Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and trust your Apple ID
- Open the app
7-day refresh: Free Apple IDs require re-signing every 7 days. WireGuard (sideloadly's helper) can automate this with Wi-Fi sync.
Method 4: Enabling iOS Developer Mode (iOS 16+)#
Some sideloading tools require Developer Mode to be enabled first.
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Developer Mode
- Toggle it on and restart your device
- After restart, confirm turning on Developer Mode
This is required for some enterprise app installations and testing frameworks. It doesn't enable sideloading on its own.
Common Issues & Fixes#
"Unable to install because the app is not trusted" → Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and trust the developer profile.
App crashes immediately after install → The IPA may be compiled for a different architecture. Ensure you're using the correct build for your iOS version.
Certificate revoked by Apple → This happens when Apple detects mass signing. Use a paid developer account for more stable certificates, or switch to an unrevoked source.
Frequently Asked Questions#
Is iOS sideloading legal?
Yes, in most jurisdictions. Installing apps on your own device doesn't violate any law. The EU DMA legally requires Apple to permit third-party marketplaces. Apple's ToS may be affected, but this is a civil matter between you and Apple, not a legal issue.
Will sideloading void my iPhone warranty?
Apple's warranty covers hardware defects. Installing apps via sideloading doesn't void your hardware warranty, but Apple could refuse software support for issues related to sideloaded apps.
Is AltStore PAL available outside the EU?
Not currently. AltStore's non-PAL version (classic AltStore) is available globally but requires a computer to re-sign apps every 7 days.
What's the difference between sideloading and jailbreaking?
Sideloading installs apps without modifying the iOS system. Jailbreaking removes system restrictions and allows deeper customization, but it voids warranties and has more security implications.
Can I sideload on iOS 18?
Yes, with AltStore PAL (EU), Sideloadly, or AltStore classic (with computer). TrollStore support for iOS 18 is version-dependent — check the TrollStore compatibility chart.
