Best Android File Managers in 2026 — Tested & Ranked
We tested 7 file managers on Android for local files, network shares, cloud access, and APK management. Here's which ones are worth installing.
The default file manager on most Android phones is adequate but not great. If you're managing APKs, accessing network shares, or dealing with large file transfers, a better file manager saves meaningful time. After testing seven options, here are our recommendations.
1. Files by Google — Best Free Option#
Google's own file manager is the most polished free option. It handles the basics extremely well and has the cleanest UI of any file manager on this list.
Standout features:
- Duplicate file finder that actually works
- Offline file sharing via Bluetooth (no WiFi required)
- One-tap junk cleaner
- ZIP file support
- APK installation handled cleanly
What it lacks: Network share support (no SMB/FTP), no built-in cloud file manager (links to Drive only), no root access.
Best for: Most users who don't need network shares.
2. Solid Explorer — Best Power User Option#
Solid Explorer is a paid file manager (one-time €2.99) and genuinely worth it for regular use.
Key features:
- Dual-pane view (huge for file management on tablets and large phones)
- SMB, SFTP, WebDAV, FTP network shares
- Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box cloud integration
- Built-in media viewer and text editor
- Root access support
- Archive support: ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, and more
The dual-pane mode is transformative if you're frequently moving files between locations. Drag and drop between panes works reliably on Android 13+.
3. MiXplorer — Best Free Power Option#
MiXplorer is the most feature-rich free file manager and has a deeply passionate community keeping it updated.
Key features:
- Free (no ads, no in-app purchases)
- Tabbed browsing
- SMB, SFTP, WebDAV, FTP, Samba
- Built-in PDF viewer, image viewer, media player
- Highly customisable UI
The interface is less polished than Solid Explorer but the functionality is largely identical for free.
Caveat: Available from XDA Labs↗ or the developer's site — not on the Play Store. Requires installing an APK directly.
4. Total Commander — Best for Transferring Large Files#
Total Commander has been around since the Windows XP era and it shows — the UI is utilitarian — but its reliability for large file transfers over SMB and FTP is unmatched.
If you frequently move large video files over your local network, Total Commander's transfer speeds and retry-on-error handling beat every other option we tested.
5. X-plore — Best for Network Discovery#
X-plore's built-in network device discovery is the most reliable of any Android file manager. It finds NAS drives, Windows file shares, and FTP servers automatically without manual IP entry.
Good for: Users who need to access multiple network shares without knowing IP addresses.
What to Avoid#
ES File Explorer — Once the most popular, now bundled with adware and makes background network requests. Avoid.
File Manager Pro (various cheap clones) — Many Play Store file managers with "Pro" in the name are ad-laden with no meaningful functionality. Stick to the options above.
Frequently Asked Questions#
Do I need a file manager to install APKs? No — Android's built-in Downloads app can open and install APKs. But a proper file manager makes navigating to the right folder much faster.
Which file manager works best with USB drives? Solid Explorer and X-plore both have USB OTG support. Once you connect a USB drive (with an OTG adapter), it appears in the file manager like a local folder.
Can a file manager access root files?
Yes — Solid Explorer, MiXplorer, and Total Commander all have root mode. You need a root-enabled device (e.g. running Magisk). Without root, even with root mode enabled in the file manager, you can't access /data or /system.
Files by Google vs the Samsung My Files app — which is better? On Samsung devices, My Files is better integrated (handles Samsung-specific paths, integrates with Samsung Cloud). Files by Google is better for duplicate cleaning and offline sharing. Worth having both.
